The Richmond Hockey Official Association held their annual picnic and meeting at Deer Run Park on April 26, 2008. Officials and their families gathered to celebrate another terrific season of ice hockey in Richmond. Rodney Bryant, RHOA president, introduced the John D’Angelo Memorial award. Freddie D’Angelo was honored to present the award on behalf of the D’Angelo family to the most outstanding official of the year, Ken Smiley.
Mr. Smiley was unanimously selected to receive the award in its inaugural year. He displayed the same style of officiating this season as John is remembered for. He refereed with a great sense of humor backed up with his excellent rule knowledge while upholding his integrity. Ken’s name is the first of many to be engraved on the trophy. The trophy will be displayed in the trophy case of SkateNation Plus until it is presented to a new winner next year. See current recipients below.
